How much does a tradie website cost in New Zealand in 2026?
Most Kiwi tradies pay between NZ$1,000 and NZ$6,000 for a website built for them, with agency builds often higher. The range is wide because NZ pricing guides lump very different products together, from a budget package to a fully custom lead-generation site.
Going by NZ guides from 2025 and 2026, a starter small business site of 3 to 5 pages is around NZ$1,000 to NZ$3,000, and a standard 5 to 8 page site is around NZ$2,500 to NZ$6,000. Some agencies quote NZ$5,000 to NZ$15,000 for the same size of site, and custom lead-generating builds can reach NZ$9,000 to NZ$30,000.
At the cheap end, a few NZ providers sell fixed packages from around NZ$599, and Kiwi DIY builders offer pay-monthly plans from about NZ$15 a month. Nearly all NZ quotes are excluding GST, so add 15% if you are not GST registered.
What do the different options cost?
Here is a simple comparison in New Zealand dollars, before GST.
- DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, local builders like Dazzly or Rocketspark): roughly NZ$15 to NZ$40 a month, plus your own time.
- Budget fixed package: around NZ$599 to NZ$1,200 for a simple site, usually with hosting charged monthly.
- Freelancer or small studio: about NZ$1,000 to NZ$6,000 for a 3 to 8 page trade site.
- Agency: about NZ$5,000 to NZ$15,000 or more for a small business site, and NZ$9,000 to NZ$30,000 for a custom lead-generation build.
- Hosting and care plans: about NZ$25 to NZ$150 a month on top of most builds.
- Mago Labs (my offer): NZ$1,449 one-off for up to 6 pages, no monthly fee.
Is a pay-monthly website worth it for a Kiwi tradie?
A pay-monthly website is worth it if the monthly fee is small and you are comfortable renting rather than owning. It gets poor value when the monthly fee is high and the site disappears the day you stop paying.
In New Zealand the pay-monthly market is a bit different from Australia. You will see DIY builders with low monthly fees (around NZ$15 a month for a basic plan), and agencies that bundle hosting, updates and support into care plans of roughly NZ$25 to NZ$150 a month on top of a build. Full done-for-you subscriptions with no upfront cost exist too, but compare them on a three-year total, not the monthly figure.
Ask whether there is a lock-in contract, and who owns the site and the domain if you leave. A good provider will answer both questions in writing without fuss.
What are the hidden and ongoing costs?
Plenty of NZ quotes look cheap until you add the yearly costs. These are the ones to plan for.
- Domain name: a .co.nz or .nz usually costs about NZ$23 to NZ$50 a year, and renewal is often higher than the first-year price.
- Hosting: about NZ$12 to NZ$60 a month for most small business sites.
- Care plans: about NZ$40 to NZ$150 a month for updates, backups and support, mainly on WordPress.
- GST: 15% on top of most quotes, plans and renewals if you are not GST registered.
- Changes after launch: often charged hourly, so small edits like new photos or a new service can add up.
- Platform fees: if you sell online through Shopify, its own monthly fees and app costs come on top.
What does a tradie website cost over three years?
Looking at three years gives a fair comparison between paying upfront and paying monthly. These are rough totals before GST.
- DIY builder at NZ$15 a month: about NZ$540 over three years, plus your time.
- Budget package at NZ$599 plus NZ$12.90 a month hosting: about NZ$1,064 over three years.
- Studio build at NZ$3,000 plus a NZ$59 a month care plan: about NZ$5,124 over three years.
- Agency build at NZ$6,000 plus a NZ$99 a month care plan: about NZ$9,564 over three years.
- Mago Labs at NZ$1,449 plus a .co.nz domain: about NZ$1,520 to NZ$1,600 over three years, plus any changes you pay for after year one.
Do I need a website if I get work through Builderscrack or NoCowboys?
Most tradies still benefit from their own website, even if jobs come through Builderscrack, NoCowboys or word of mouth. Those platforms are useful, but your profile lives on their site, next to other tradies competing for the same job.
Your own website is where people land when they search your business name after a referral, and it can show up for local searches like "electrician Hamilton" or "roofer Christchurch". Link to your platform profiles and Google reviews from your site so people can see your track record in one place.
What should a tradie website include?
A tradie website needs to tell someone on their phone, quickly, what you do, where you work, and how to get a quote.
Include a page for each main service (a builder's decks and bathroom renovations are different searches), the towns and suburbs you cover, photos of your own jobs, a tap-to-call button and a short quote form. If you are a Licensed Building Practitioner, a registered electrician or a registered plumber, say so and give your licence or registration number so customers can check the public register.
Behind the scenes, ask for proper page titles, local business schema, a sitemap submitted to Google Search Console, and a Google Business Profile linked to the site. These cost little at build time and make a real difference to whether Google understands where you work.
How does Mago Labs price a tradie website?
I charge NZ$1,449 once for a custom site of up to 6 pages, with no monthly fee. That covers the design, all the copy written for you, tap-to-call and a quote form, the Google basics (titles, schema, sitemap, Search Console), Google Business Profile setup, and a year of edits and support.
You get a free working preview within 48 hours, and the site is usually live in about 14 days. You own the domain, the code and the content. The only extra cost is your domain name, paid to your own registrar.
After the first year you can leave it running and pay nothing, pay NZ$45 an hour for changes, or edit it yourself through a light CMS. I work remotely from India and keep to NZ hours for calls, so I am not a local Kiwi studio. If face-to-face matters to you, a local freelancer is a good option.
